In Germany, according to an old tradition, 13 ({{Lang|de|dreizehn}}), as the first compound number, was the first number written in digits; the numbers 0 (''{{Lang|de|null}}'') through 12 (''{{Lang|de|zwölf}}'') were spelled out.
