===The Great Rapprochement with Great Britain=== The [[Great Rapprochement]] was the convergence of diplomatic, political, military, and economic objectives of the United States and Great Britain from 1895 to 1915. Roosevelt played a central role through his close contacts with British intellectuals and politicians and in his diplomatic work regarding the Panama Canal.<ref>Howard K. Beale, "Roosevelt and the cementing of an Anglo American Entente," in Beale, ''Theodore Roosevelt and the Rise of America to World Power'' .(Johns Hopkins University Press. 1956) pp. 81β171. The British diplomats voted with the Roosevelt's diplomats to deny Canada's claim to an ocean port that would allow access to the gold mines in the Canadian Yukon. The Canadians felt betrayed by the British control of Canadian foreign policy in order to appease the United States.<ref>Thomas A. Bailey, "Theodore Roosevelt and the Alaska Boundary Settlement", ''Canadian Historical Review'' (1937) 18#2 pp. 123-130.</ref> In 1915β1917 Roosevelt was the leading proponent of American entering the war on the side of Great Britain. In October, 1916, campaigning for the Republican ticket to defeat President Woodrow Wilson's reelection, Roosevelt lashed out:<blockquote> President Wilson's ignoble shirking of responsibility has been clothed in an utterly misleading phrase, the phrase of a coward, ''He kept us out of war.'' In actual reality, war has been creeping nearer and nearer... and we face it without policy, plan, purpose or preparation.<ref> Edmund Morris, ''Colonel Roosevelt'' (2010) p. 469.</ref></blockquote> Roosevelt argued that the United States had a moral obligation to support the Allies and that neutrality, as President Wilson promised, was both cowardly and dangerous.<ref>D.H.
