===Maritime transport===
Trieste's maritime location and its former long-term status as part of the [[Austrian Empire]]—later the [[Austro-Hungarian Empire]]—made the [[Port of Trieste]] the major commercial port for much of the landlocked areas of central Europe. Significant volumes of goods pass through the container, steel works and oil terminals, all located to the south of the city centre. After many years of stagnation, a change in the leadership placed the port on a steady growth path, recording a 40% increase in shipping traffic {{As of|2007|lc=y}}.<ref name = trdt/>
