===Industrial Revolution===

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, technological advances and mechanisation resulted in the [[Industrial Revolution]] which transformed a largely agrarian society and caused considerable social upheaval. [[Economies of scale]] and increased output per worker allowed steam-based factories to undercut production of traditional cottage industries. Much of the agricultural workforce was uprooted from the countryside and moved into large urban centres of production. The consequent overcrowding into areas with little supporting infrastructure saw dramatic increases in mortality, crime, and social deprivation. (Many Sunday schools for pre-working-age children (5 or 6) had funeral clubs to pay for each other's funeral arrangements.) The process of industrialisation threatened many livelihoods, which prompted some to sabotage factories. These saboteurs were known as "[[Luddism|Luddites]]".
