==Health disparities== As of 2005, more "westernized," urbanized countries had much higher rates of asthma than "less developed" countries. However, exposure to urbanization alone has not been able to explain these disparities.<ref>{{cite journal |vauthors=Gold DR, Wright R |title=Population Disparities in Asthma |journal=The Annual Review of Public Health |volume=26 |date=April 2005 | doi=10.1146/annurev.publhealth.26.021304.144528}}</ref> In the United States, the burden of asthma falls disproportionately on racial and ethnic minorities and economically underprivileged populations.<ref name="pmid34602887">{{cite journal |vauthors=Perez MF, Coutinho MT |title=An Overview of Health Disparities in Asthma |journal=The Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine |volume=94 |issue=3 |pages=497β507 |date=September 2021 |pmid=34602887 |pmc=8461584 |doi= |url=}}</ref> As of 2016, the prevalence of asthma was highest in non-Hispanic black and Puerto Rican children. The prevalence of asthma was also over 1.5 times higher in Americans 100% below the poverty level than those 450% of the poverty level or higher.<ref>{{cite book| vauthors = Mahdavinia M |title=Health Disparities in Allergic Diseases: An Evidence-Based Look at Causes, Conditions, and Outcomes |date=2020 |publisher=Springer Cham |isbn=978-3-030-31221-3|pages = 145β179 |url=https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-31222-0 }}</ref> As of 2021, the mortality rate for black Americans with asthma was two times higher than for white Americans.<ref name="pmid34602887"/> Neighborhoods in the United States with predominantly racial and ethnic minority populations are affected to a greater extent than predominantly white neighborhoods by air pollutants, which are a significant factor in the occurrence of asthma. Additionally, residents of areas that were more likely to be redlined have asthma emergency department visit rates 2.4 times higher than residents of areas that were less likely to be redlined.<ref name="pmid34602887"/>
