There are currently 400 deputies and 200 senators, who are elected in general elections held every five years. The [[president of the Italian Republic]] nominates five [[Senators for life in Italy|senators for life]] (''senatori a vita''). [[List of presidents of Italy|Emeritus presidents of the republic]] are also appointed senators for life. The two houses of parliament together form a perfect bicameral system, meaning they perform identical functions, but do so separately.
