In March 1837, shortly before his death, Leopardi announced that he would gather into one volume some "thoughts" ("pensieri") on man and society. Such a collection was supposed to be part of a French edition of the complete works of Leopardi. The bulk of the contents of ''Pensieri'' are derived from the ''Zibaldone''.
