Early mention of postmodernism in [[graphic design]] appeared in the British magazine, ''Design'', during the late 1960s.{{Sfn|Poynor|2003|p=18}} The discussion took a pragmatic if not entirely comfortable view of graphic design as engaging with the economic necessities of a changing world. Graphic design had the role of "active stylization of product surfaces (such as those of packaging and promotion)", engaging without moralizing with consumer desires.
