Although Christianity played a dominant role in the Gothic sacred architecture, Jewish communities were present in many European cities during the Middle Ages and they also built their [[Synagogue|houses of prayer]] in the Gothic style. Unfortunately, most of the Gothic synagogues did not survive, because they were often destroyed in connection with [[Persecution of Jews|persecution of the Jews]] (e. g. in Bamberg, Nürnberg, Regensburg, [[Judenplatz|Vienna]]). One of the best preserved examples of a Gothic synagogue is the [[Old New Synagogue]] in Prague which was completed around 1270 and never rebuilt.{{Clarify|reason=|date=April 2020}}{{Citation needed|date=April 2020}}
