Law enforcement is provided by the Huntington Beach Police Department.

The local oil has such extreme mercury contamination that metallic mercury is regularly drained from oil pipelines and equipment. Oil operations increase when the price of oil rises. Some oil fields have been approved for development. The [[brownfields|worst-polluted areas]] have been reclaimed as parks.
