Flight 007 has been the subject of ongoing controversy and has spawned a number of [[Conspiracy theory|alternate theories]].<ref name="Knight">Knight, p. 381</ref> Many of these are based on the suppression of evidence such as the flight data recorders,<ref name="Bohlen"/> unexplained details such as the role of a USAF [[Boeing RC-135|RC-135]] surveillance aircraft,<ref name="Schultz367"/><ref>Johnson, p. 175</ref> the untimely destruction of the U.S. Air Force's King Salmon radar data, Cold War [[disinformation]] and propaganda and Gennadiy Osipovich's (the Soviet fighter pilot who shot down flight 007) statement that although he knew the plane was a civilian aircraft, he suspected that it could have been used as a spy plane.<ref>Pry, p. 31</ref><ref>Pearson, p. 17</ref><ref>Young, p. 137</ref>

American historian and professor [[Alexander Dallin]] in his 1985 book concluded that no hypothesis of inadvertent intrusion of the Boeing 747 into the Soviet prohibited airspace survives scrutiny, albeit there is no direct evidence of deliberate intrusion either.<ref>Dallin, A.
