Article 28 of the [[Maldives Constitution]] guarantees freedom of the press and stipulates that:

However, this protection is compromised by the Evidence Act, which came into effect in January 2023 and grants courts the authority to compel journalists to reveal their confidential sources. The Maldives Media Council (MMC) and the [[Maldives Journalists Association]] (MJA) serve as crucial watchdogs in addressing and combating these threats.
