In 1828, Gauss was appointed as head of the board for weights and measures of the Kingdom of Hanover. He created [[Standard (metrology)|standards]] for length and measure. This work achieved international importance due to an 1836 law that connected the Hanoverian measures with the English ones.<ref name="Olesko" />
