Glossop is the smallest town in England to have had a team in the top tier of the [[English football league system]]. [[Glossop North End A.F.C.|Glossop North End]] were members of the [[Football League]] between 1898 and 1915; around the turn of the 20th century, they played in [[Football League First Division|Division One]].<ref name=glossopnorthend>{{cite web|title=Glossop North End History|url=http://www.nwcfl.com/clubhistory.php?id=12|access-date=8 October 2014|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141012011358/http://www.nwcfl.com/clubhistory.php?id=12|archive-date=12 October 2014}}</ref> The team now plays in the [[North West Counties Football League Premier Division]].

The town also has a number of sports clubs, including tennis, golf, rugby union, cricket, bowls, running, cycling and sailing at [[Torside reservoir]].
