The castle has become a recognisable symbol of Edinburgh, and of Scotland.<ref>Tabraham (2008), p.63</ref> It appears, in stylised form, on the [[coat of arms|coats of arms]] of the [[City of Edinburgh Council]] and the [[University of Edinburgh]]. It also features on the badge of [[No. 603 Squadron RAF|No. 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron]] which was based at [[Edinburgh Airport#History|RAF Turnhouse]] (now Edinburgh Airport) during [[Second World War]].<ref>{{cite book|title=Spitfire Dive-Bombers Versus the V2|first=Bill|last=Simpson|page=138|publisher=Pen & Sword Aviation|year=2007|isbn=9781844155712}}</ref> Images of the castle are used as a logo by organisations including [[Edinburgh Rugby]], the ''[[Edinburgh Evening News]]'', [[Hibernian F.C.]] and the [[Edinburgh Marathon]]. It also appears on the "[[Castle series stamps|Castle series]]" of Royal Mail postage stamps, and has been represented on various issues of [[Banknotes of the pound sterling|banknotes]] issued by Scottish clearing banks.
