After marrying his wife Mary in 1911, the couple went on a long drive, because he did not have time for a honeymoon.<ref name=adb/> Their car crashed where the [[Hume Highway|Sydney–Melbourne road]] crossed the [[Main Southern railway line]] north of [[Albury]], leading to the [[level crossing]] there being named after him; it was later replaced by the Billy Hughes Bridge.
