From the 13th century BCE, [[Assyria]] used [[military history of the Neo-Assyrian Empire#Deportations|mass deportation]] as a punishment for [[List of revolutions and rebellions|rebellions]]. By the [[9th century BCE]], the Assyrians regularly deported thousands of restless subjects to other lands. Assyria forcibly resettled the inhabitants of the [[Kingdom of Israel (Samaria)|Northern Kingdom of Israel]] in 720 BCE; these became known as the [[Ten Lost Tribes]].
