The Springfield Police Department was founded in 1840 as part of the city charter. As of 2020, the police chief was Kenneth Scarlette and the department had 242 employees.

Springfield Police officer Samuel Rosario was arrested by the [[Illinois State Police]] on February 28, 2017, after fighting with a teenager on charges of official misconduct and battery.
