It was founded in March 1979 as part of the {{Ill|People's Liberation Army Basic Engineering Corps|zh|中国人民解放军基本建设工程兵}}. It was under the joint dual command of the Basic Engineering Corps and the {{Ill|Ministry of Metallurgical Industry|zh|中華人民共和國冶金工業部}}.<ref name=":6">{{Cite web |date=2017-07-16 |title=黄金部队与军事地质 |url=http://www.xinhuanet.com/politics/2017-07/16/c_129656309.htm |access-date=2025-04-30 |website=Xinhua}}</ref>

It consisted of 7 regiment level battalions and 12 geological teams.<ref name=":6" />

The Gold Corps was handed to the PAP in January 1985.<ref name=":33" /> After 1985, it went under the dual control of the {{Ill|Ministry of Metallurgical Industry|zh|中華人民共和國冶金工業部}} and [[Ministry of Public Security (China)|Ministry of Public Security]]. It's role in this time was to do geological surveys for gold mining.<ref name=":6" />

After February 1999, it went under the dual control of the People's Armed Police and the {{Ill|State Economic and Trade Commission|zh|中华人民共和国国家经济贸易委员会}}. It's official duties were: finding gold deposits, providing security and law enforcement to gold mines, mining gold and preventing conflict near gold mines.<ref name=":6" />

In 2016, it's role was switched yet again to focus primarily on [[military geology]] related work in the [[Deepening National Defense and Military Reform]].<ref name=":6" />

In 2018, the Gold Corps was disbanded and its personnel were handed to the [[Ministry of Natural Resources (China)|Ministry of Natural Resources]], the [[China Geological Survey]] and the [[China National Gold Group Corporation]].<ref name=":2" />
