Nicosia has a large student community as it is the seat of five universities, the [[University of Cyprus]] (UCY), the [[University of Nicosia]], the [[European University Cyprus]], the [[Open University of Cyprus]] and [[Frederick University]]. In addition, the city is home to the oldest still-operational [[Lyceum|high-school]] in Cyprus, [[Pancyprian Gymnasium]].

Nicosia is also home to one of the largest historic Armenian schools, the [[Melkonian Educational Institute]] established in 1926 which operated until 2005. The Melkonian Institution was created as an orphanage in the aftermath of the [[Armenian genocide]] of 1915–1923.
