The first [[Marxism|Marxist]] groups in Cyprus formed in Limassol in the early 1920s; in 1926, the [[Communist party]] of Cyprus was formed in the city. Its successor, [[Progressive Party of Working People|Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL)]], has dominated municipal elections since the first free elections in 1943, won by [[Ploutis Servas]].

The [[European People's Party]] held an extraordinary party summit in Limassol in 2013. The list of participants in the summit included [[European Council]] members, government representatives, [[European Commission]] representatives, opposition members and leaders, and [[European Parliament]] representatives. Notably, [[Andreas Christou]], an [[Progressive Party of Working People|AKEL]] member, was re-elected mayor of Limassol in December 2011 to serve his second five-year term.
