In January 2017, Abdul-Jabbar was appointed to the [[Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee]] by [[United States Secretary of the Treasury]] [[Steven Mnuchin]]. According to the [[United States Mint]], Abdul-Jabbar is a keen coin collector whose interest in the life of [[Alexander Hamilton]] had led him into the hobby.
