===Wailing Wall=== The name "Wailing Wall", and descriptions such as "wailing place", appeared regularly in English literature during the 19th century.<ref>"Wailing Wall" appears, for example, in J.J. Reynolds, ''Jewish Advocate for the Young'' (1859). H. Bonar, ''Days and Nights in the East'' (1866) and [[J.R. Macduff]], ''Memories of Olivet'' (1868), and many later works.</ref><ref>{{harvnb|Barclay|1858|p=493}}</ref><ref>{{harvnb|Warner|1878|p=45}}</ref> The name ''Mur des Lamentations'' was used in French and ''Klagemauer'' in German. This description stemmed from the Jewish practice of coming to the site to mourn and bemoan the destruction of the [[Temple in Jerusalem|Temple]] and the loss of national freedom it symbolized.<ref name= Halkin01/> {{Quote box | quote = Jews may often be seen sitting for hours at the Wailing-place bent in sorrowful meditation over the history of their race, and repeating oftentimes the words of the Seventy-ninth Psalm. On Fridays especially, Jews of both sexes, of all ages, and from all countries, assemble in large numbers to kiss the sacred stones and weep outside the precincts they may not enter. | source = Charles Wilson, 1881<ref>{{harvnb|Wilson|1881|p=41}}</ref> | width = 30em }}
