The F&SF serialization has a series of illustrations by Fred Kirberger (two covers plus black and white interior art).<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?27527|title = Summary Bibliography: Kirberger}}</ref> Although the secondary protagonist Mr. Kiku is clearly described in the text as a black Kenyan, he is illustrated as a white man.<ref>July issue, p. 101; https://archive.org/details/Fantasy_Science_Fiction_v007n01_1954-07_Gorgon776/page/n103/mode/2up?view=theater</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.rafeeqmcgiveron.com/serialized-novels.html|title=Serialized Novels}}</ref> Lummox and the other Hroshii are only depicted as vague shapes or textures at the edges of some scenes.

The original Scribner's hardcover edition has cover art and a frontispiece by [[Clifford Geary]] that do depict Lummox.
