Until 2007, Sundeved ({{langx|de|Sundewitt}}) was also the name of a municipality in the former [[South Jutland County]]. The municipality covered an area of 69&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>, and had a total population of 5,298 (2005).<ref>{{Cite web|title=Kommunefakta|url=http://www2.netborger.dk/Kommunefakta/|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070812152043/http://www2.netborger.dk/Kommunefakta/|archive-date=12 August 2007|website=KMD|language=da}}</ref> Its last mayor was John Solkær Pedersen. Towns in the municipality included [[Avnbøl]], [[Ballebro]], [[Blans]], [[Stenderup]], [[Ullerup]], [[Vester Sottrup]], and [[Øster Sottrup]].

The municipality was created in 1970 as the result a {{lang|da|kommunalreform}} ("Municipality Reform") that merged a number of existing [[parish]]es: Nybøl Parish, Sottrup Parish, and Ullerup Parish. Sundeved municipality ceased to exist as the result of [[Municipalities of Denmark#Municipal Reform 2007|''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007)]]. It was combined with existing [[Augustenborg Municipality|Augustenborg]], [[Broager Municipality|Broager]], [[Gråsten]], [[Nordborg]], [[Sydals]], and [[Sønderborg]] municipalities to form the new [[Sønderborg Municipality]]. This created a municipality with an area of 499&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup> and a total population of over 70,000 people (2005).
