According to the [[United States Census Bureau|U.S. Census Bureau]], the county has a total area of {{convert|280|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|269|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|11|sqmi|km2}} (3.9%) is water.<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=April 23, 2011|date=February 12, 2011|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> The independent city of Fredericksburg developed at the fall line of the Rappahannock, supporting mills run by water power. To the northwest of there is the [[Piedmont region of Virginia|Piedmont]] area. [[Aquia Creek]] empties into the tidal segment of the Potomac River at Brent Point. Due to its location and proximity to Washington D.C. many [[Federal government of the United States|federal government]] workers and commuters live in Stafford County. Stafford County's location close to Washington, D.C. and [[Marine Corps Base Quantico|MCB Quanico]] are one of the major reasons of the [[suburbanization]] and growth of the county.
