The film was the feature film directorial debut of [[Harry Winer]].<ref name=AFI/>

Lea Thompson mentioned in an interview that after their first day of shooting, they were ten days behind schedule and what was supposed to be a three-month shoot became six. She also mentioned that "We had T-shirts printed up that said, '''SpaceCamp'': It's Not Just A Movie, It's A Career.'
