Slime molds have little or no fossil history, as might be expected given that they are small and soft-bodied.<ref name="Introduction to the Slime Molds">{{cite web |url=http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/protista/slimemolds.html |title=Introduction to the 'Slime Molds' |publisher=[[University of California Museum of Paleontology]] }}</ref> The grouping is [[polyphyletic]], consisting of multiple [[clade]]s (emphasised in the [[phylogenetic tree]]) widely scattered across the [[Eukaryote]]s.
