A stagecoach stop was opened in 1831. The [[Elizabethtown and Paducah Railroad]] arrived in the 1870s.{{citation needed|date=May 2024}}

Shortly before the [[American Civil War|Civil War]], the area became popular among [[German American|German immigrants]], mostly from [[Bavaria]]. In 1897, they erected St. Helen's Catholic Church. The community was commonly known as "St.&nbsp;Helen's" for the next few years, but the post office (est.&thinsp;1902) could not adopt it because there was [[Saint Helens, Kentucky|another community with the name]] in [[Lee County, Kentucky|Lee County]].<ref name="Kleber" />
