Ruhollah began to study the [[Qur'an]] and elementary Persian at the age of six.<ref name="rei311">{{harvnb|Reich|1990|p=311}}</ref> The following year, he began to attend a local school, where he learned religion, ''noheh khani'' (lamentation recital), and other traditional subjects.<ref name="moin18" /> Throughout his childhood, he continued his religious education with the assistance of his relatives, including his mother's cousin, Ja'far,<ref name="moin18" /> and his elder brother, Morteza Pasandideh.<ref name="mil85">{{harvnb|Milani|1994|p=85}}</ref>
