===Election===
[[John Peckham]], Archbishop of Canterbury, died in December 1292. On 13 February 1293, Winchelsey was elected as his successor.<ref name=Handbook233>Fryde, et al. ''Handbook of British Chronology'' p. 233</ref> Unusually, neither the pope nor the king had a hand in his election.<ref name=DNB/> On 1 April, Winchelsey left England for Rome to get papal confirmation.<ref name=DNB/> He was not consecrated immediately because of [[Papal election, 1292–1294|a papal vacancy]]; [[Pope Celestine V|Celestine V]] eventually performed the ceremony at [[L'Aquila|Aquila]] on 12 September 1294.<ref name=BHOCant>Greenway "Canterbury: Archbishops" ''Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1066–1300'': Volume 2: Monastic Cathedrals (Northern and Southern Provinces)</ref>
