Some features include:
* Palatalization of {{IPA|/l/}} in consonant clusters (i.e. {{IPA|/bl pl ɡl kl fl/}}); e.g., {{lang|roa-ES|pllou}} {{IPA|[ˈpʎɔw]}} ('it rains'), {{lang|roa-ES|cllau}} {{IPA|[ˈkʎaw]}} ('key')
* General loss of Latin final unstressed vowels except for {{IPA|/a/}}, as in Catalan, and rarely {{IPA|/o/}}. Moving westward preserved final {{IPA|/o/}} is more frequent.
* Occasional [[diphthong]]ization of Romance short vowels, as in [[Aragonese language|Aragonese]]: {{IPA|/ɛ/}} → {{IPA|[je̞]}}; {{IPA|/ɔ/}} → {{IPA|[we̞]}}, becoming more generalized moving westward; e.g., Latin {{lang|la|terra}} → {{lang|roa-ES|tierra}} {{IPA|[ˈtje̞ra]}}; Latin {{lang|la|pōns}} → {{lang|roa-ES|puent}} {{IPA|[ˈpwe̞n(t)]}}

* Different results for second-person plural endings of verbs (Latin -{{lang|la|tis}}), from west to east: -''z'' {{IPA|[θ]}} (as in some western variants of Aragonese), -''tz'' {{IPA|[ts]}} (as in [[Occitan language|Occitan]]) or -''u'' {{IPA|[w]}} (as in modern Catalan).
* Different results from the Romance voiced prepalatal affricate ({{IPA|[dʒ]}} from ''i''-, ''dj''- and ''gj''-), from west to east: {{IPA|[tʃ]}} (as in some occidental variants of Aragonese and {{Lang|ca-valencia|apitxat}} [[Valencian language|Valencian]]), {{IPA|[dʒ]}} (as in medieval Catalan and most of contemporary Valencian and Occitan), {{IPA|[ʒ]}} (as in most of contemporary Catalan).
