The word regicide seems to have come into popular use among continental [[Catholic Church|Catholics]] when [[Pope Sixtus V]] renewed the [[papal bull]] of [[excommunication]] against the "crowned regicide" Queen [[Elizabeth I of England|Elizabeth I]],<ref>{{cite book |last=da Magliano |first=Pamfilo |date=1867 |title=The Life of Saint Francis of Assisi and a Sketch of the Franciscan Order |location=New York |publisher=P.
