==Geography== Red Dog Mine is located at {{coord|68.071989|-162.876044|type:city_region:US-AK|format=dms|display=i}}.<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=April 23, 2011|date=February 12, 2011|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It is in the DeLong Mountains in the remote western [[Brooks Range]] about {{convert|90|mi|km}} north of [[Kotzebue, Alaska|Kotzebue]] and {{convert|55|mi|km}} from the [[Chukchi Sea]]. Red Dog Mine is very isolated. It is located within the Northwest Arctic Borough, an area approximately the size of Indiana with only 11 communities, none connected by roads, with a total population of only 7,523 people at the [[2010 United States census|2010 census]]. The nearest of those communities are Noatak, population 514, roughly {{convert|50|mi|km|-1}} south and Kivalina, population 374, roughly {{convert|60|mi|km|-1}} west at the 2010 census.<ref name="GR2">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=January 31, 2008|title=U.S. Census website}}</ref> Although native populations have historically used the nearby area for seasonal food-gathering, there are no permanent residents at the mine or the port site. The mine's workforce consists of about 460 employees and contractors, of which somewhat more than half will be on-site at any given time.
