==Geography== Port Allegany is located at (41.814919, -78.279218). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.8 sqmi, all land. Port Allegany is located in McKean County, which is generally considered to be part of the Northern Pennsylvania region (and sometimes part of the Northern Tier region). This part of the state is rural and heavily forested. Before the arrival of the first European settlers, the area was densely forested with Eastern Hemlock. Many of these sometimes massive trees were cut for lumber or sometimes only for their bark, which was used in the tanning industry. The rough and ready lifestyles and skills of the men who did this work are commemorated each year at the "Barkpeelers' Festival" at the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum in nearby Ulysses, Pennsylvania. Many older homes, barns and other buildings in the region were at least partly built with hemlock lumber. The contemporary forests in the region produce high quality black cherry lumber, valued in the furniture and cabinetry industries. While there are currently no working furniture factories in the region, the trade in black cherry continues. ===Climate=== {{Weather box <!-- Infobox begins --> | single line = Y | location = Port Allegany, Pennsylvania (1991β2020) <!-- Average high temperatures --> | Jan high F =31.0 | Feb high F =33.8 | Mar high F =43.1 | Apr high F =56.6 | May high F =68.0 | Jun high F =75.6 | Jul high F =79.5 | Aug high F =77.9 | Sep high F =71.4 | Oct high F =59.2 | Nov high F =46.8 | Dec high F =35.8 <!-- Mean daily temperature --> | Jan mean F =22.3 | Feb mean F =24.2 | Mar mean F =32.7 | Apr mean F =44.0 | May mean F =55.2 | Jun mean F =63.7 | Jul mean F =67.5 | Aug mean F =66.2 | Sep mean F =59.7 | Oct mean F =48.1 | Nov mean F =37.6 | Dec mean F =28.2 <!-- Average low temperatures --> | Jan low F =13.6 | Feb low F =14.5 | Mar low F =22.3 | Apr low F =31.3 | May low F =42.5 | Jun low F =51.7 | Jul low F =55.5 | Aug low F =54.5 | Sep low F =48.0 | Oct low F =36.9 | Nov low F =28.4 | Dec low F =20.6 <!-- Total precipitation, this should include rain and snow. --> | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch =3.05 | Feb precipitation inch =2.25 | Mar precipitation inch =2.98 | Apr precipitation inch =3.53 | May precipitation inch =3.83 | Jun precipitation inch =4.24 | Jul precipitation inch =4.53 | Aug precipitation inch =4.10 | Sep precipitation inch =3.69 | Oct precipitation inch =3.88 | Nov precipitation inch =3.27 | Dec precipitation inch =3.24 <!-- Snowfall --> | Jan snow inch =14.1 | Feb snow inch =12.1 | Mar snow inch =9.4 | Apr snow inch =1.7 | May snow inch =0.0 | Jun snow inch =0.0 | Jul snow inch =0.0 | Aug snow inch =0.0 | Sep snow inch =0.0 | Oct snow inch =0.6 | Nov snow inch =3.9 | Dec snow inch =13.3 <!-- Mandatory fields, source --> | source = NOAA }}<!-- Infobox ends -->
