==History== ''Pocono'' is a Native American name purported to mean "a stream between two mountains".<ref>{{cite book|last=Espenshade|first=Abraham Howry|title=Pennsylvania Place Names|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015012934249&view=1up&seq=5|year=1925|publisher=Evangelical Press|isbn=978-0-8063-0416-8|page=287}}</ref> Pocono Township was created as a separate township by a decree of the courts of [[Northampton County, Pennsylvania|Northampton County]], [[Pennsylvania]] in November 1816. It is bounded on the north by [[Tunkhannock Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania|Tunkhannock]] and [[Tobyhanna Township, Pennsylvania|Tobyhanna]] townships, east by [[Stroud Township, Pennsylvania|Stroud Township]], [[Coolbaugh Township, Pennsylvania|Coolbaugh]] and [[Paradise Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania|Paradise]] townships and west by [[Jackson Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania|Jackson Township]]. It took its name from the mountains which extend across it. Pocono Township comprises {{convert|35|sqmi|km2}}. In 1830 the population was 564; in 1840 the population was 973; in 1980 the population was 5,772; in 1990 the population was 7,550.
