Pico Rivera first appeared as a city in the [[1960 U.S. Census]]<ref name=1960CensusCA1/> as part of the Whittier census county division.<ref name=1960CensusCA2/> Prior to 1960, the area was included in the unincorporated portion of the now defunct Whittier Township (1950 pop. 68,368).<ref name=1950CensusCA/>
