The town sits at an elevation of {{convert|5000|ft}}, and it has a total area of {{convert|19.5|sqmi|km2}}.<ref name="Census 2010"/> The [[Mogollon Rim]], the southern boundary of the [[Colorado Plateau]], lies to the north of Payson, with elevations exceeding {{convert|7500|ft}}. There are several cold water lakes on top of the rim; they are stocked with fish by the [[Arizona Game and Fish Department]]. Payson is adjacent to the [[Tonto Apache|Tonto Apache Reservation]], and it is bordered to the east by the town of [[Star Valley, Arizona|Star Valley]]. Other nearby communities are [[Pine, Arizona|Pine]], [[Strawberry, Arizona|Strawberry]], [[Gisela, Arizona|Gisela]], [[Rye, Arizona|Rye]], [[Round Valley, Arizona|Round Valley]], and [[Oxbow Estates, Arizona|Oxbow Estates]], all within Gila County. [[Globe, Arizona|Globe]], the Gila County seat, is {{convert|80|mi}} to the south via State Routes [[Arizona State Route 87|87]] and [[Arizona State Route 188|188]]. State Route 87, the Beeline Highway, leads {{convert|90|mi}} southwest to [[Phoenix, Arizona|Phoenix]] and {{convert|90|mi}} northeast to [[Winslow, Arizona|Winslow]].
