The population density was 2,500.8 per square mile (965.8/km{{sup|2}}). There were 8,711 housing units at an average density of 936.7 per square mile (361.8/km{{sup|2}}). The racial makeup was 88.32% (20,540) [[White (U.S. Census)|white]], 1.13% (262) [[African American (U.S. Census)|black or African-American]], 0.65% (151) [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.19% (277) [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.14% (33) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.26% (293) from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 7.31% (1,701) from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race was 3.9% (868) of the population.

Of the 8,170 households, 38.1% had children under the age of 18; 58.0% were married couples living together; 23.1% had a female householder with no husband present. Of all households, 24.2% consisted of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.7 and the average family size was 3.2.

24.8% of the population was under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34.8 years. For every 100 females, the population had 104.7 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older, there were 97.3 males.

The racial makeup of the city was 94.4% White, 0.9% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 3.1% of the population.

Of the 7,264 households, 41.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 27.3% were not families. About 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.03.

The median age in the city was 34.2 years; 28.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 30.4% were from 25 to 44; 21.2% were from 45 to 64; and 12.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.4% male and 52.6% female.

The population density was {{convert|1,969.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The 4,962 housing units averaged 805.9 per square mile (311.0/km{{sup|2}}). The [[Race (United States Census)|racial makeup]] of the city was 97.43% White, 0.46% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 1.26% of the population.

Of the 4,654 households, 40.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were not families. About 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city, the population was distributed as 28.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 34.5% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,655, and for a family was $44,556. Males had a median income of $33,636 versus $21,737 for females.
