===2010 census===
The [[2010 United States census]] counted 27,935 people, 11,201 households, and 6,844 families in the township. The [[population density]] was 3,414.3 per square mile (1,318.3/km<sup>2</sup>). There were 12,991 housing units at an average density of 1,587.8 per square mile (613.1/km<sup>2</sup>). The racial makeup was 53.18% (14,855) [[White (U.S. census)|White]], 38.56% (10,772) [[Black (U.S. census)|Black or African American]], 0.34% (94) [[Native American (U.S. census)|Native American]], 2.26% (632) [[Asian (U.S. census)|Asian]], 0.03% (9) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. census)|Pacific Islander]], 2.51% (701) from [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census#Race|other races]], and 3.12% (872) from two or more races. Of the 11,201 households, 23.6% had children under the age of 18; 39.6% were married couples living together; 16.6% had a female householder with no husband present and 38.9% were non-families. Of all households, 31.8% were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.13.<ref name=Census2010/>

20.6% of the population were under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42.7 years. For every 100 females, the population had 87.2 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 83.5 males.<ref name=Census2010/>
The Census Bureau's 2006–2010 [[American Community Survey]] showed that (in 2010 [[inflation adjustment|inflation-adjusted]] dollars) [[median household income]] was $58,630 (with a margin of error of +/− $3,034) and the median family income was $74,422 (+/− $5,369). Males had a median income of $56,743 (+/− $4,233) versus $43,853 (+/− $3,118) for females. The [[per capita income]] for the borough was $30,656 (+/− $1,559). As of the [[2000 United States census]]<ref name="GR2" /> there were 27,690 people, 10,907 households, and 6,805 families residing in the township. The population density was {{convert|3,366.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 12,217 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,485.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the township was 55.92% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 38.16% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.17% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.17% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.04% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.98% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.56% from two or more races. There were 10,907 households, out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 15.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.14.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>

In the township the population was spread out, with 23.1% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.0 males.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>

The median income for a household in the township was $46,250, and the median income for a family was $57,735. Males had a median income of $42,920 versus $31,057 for females.
