==Habitat and range==
The nene is an inhabitant of [[shrubland]], [[grassland]], [[Dune#Coastal dunes|coastal dunes]], and [[lava plain]]s, and related [[human impact on the environment|anthropogenic]] habitats such as [[pasture]] and [[golf course]]s from sea level to as much as {{convert|2400|m|ft|abbr=on}}.<ref name=FactSheet/> Some populations migrated between lowland breeding grounds and montane foraging areas.<ref name=Cornell/>

The nene could at one time be found on the islands of [[Hawaii (island)|Hawai{{okina}}i]], [[Maui]], [[Kahoolawe|Kaho{{okina}}olawe]], [[Lanai|Lāna{{okina}}i]], [[Molokai|Moloka{{okina}}i]], [[Oʻahu]] and [[Kauai|Kaua{{okina}}i]]. Today, its range is restricted to Hawai{{okina}}i, Maui, Moloka{{okina}}i, and Kaua{{okina}}i. A pair arrived at the [[James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge]] on [[Oʻahu]] in January 2014; two of their offspring survived and are seen regularly on the nearby golf courses at Turtle Bay Resort.
