At the [[2000 United States Census|2000 census]] there were 43,221 people, 13,737 households, and 10,522 families in the town.  The population density was {{convert|1,560.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 13,985 housing units at an average density of {{convert|504.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census#2000 census|racial makeup]] of the town was 84.25% White, 5.07% Black, 0.24% Native American, 3.26% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 5.02% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. Of the 13,737 households 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.0% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% were non-families. 18.4% of households were one person and 7.5% were one person aged 65 or older.  The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.30.

The age distribution was 26.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% 65 or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.0 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.1 males.
