===Handgun ban=== In 1981, Morton Grove became the first town in America to prohibit the possession of handguns. Victor Quilici, a local lawyer, sued the city (Quilici v. Morton Grove). The federal district court as well as the Appellate Court ruled the Morton Grove ordinance to be constitutional, thus upholding the gun ban. The [[Supreme Court of the United States|U.S. Supreme Court]] declined to hear the case, letting the lower court decision stand. The ban stood as village code 6β2β3.<ref>{{cite web |title=Morton Grove, Illinois Village Code |url=http://66.113.195.234/IL/Morton%20Grove/index.htm |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060213080936/http://66.113.195.234/IL/Morton%20Grove/index.htm |url-status=dead |archive-date=February 13, 2006 |access-date=July 24, 2018}}</ref> However, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2008 opinion in ''[[District of Columbia v. Heller]]'',<ref>{{cite news|author=Nick Katz |title=Village likely to lift gun ban after Supreme Court ruling |url=http://www.pioneerlocal.com/mortongrove/news/1033733,mg-gunbanplan-070108-s1.articleprint |work=Morton Grove Champion |publisher=Sun-Times Group |date=July 1, 2008 |access-date=July 2, 2008 }}{{dead link|date=June 2016|bot=medic}}{{cbignore|bot=medic}}</ref> it appeared likely that the village would drop the ban. On July 28, 2008, the city dropped its prohibition on handguns. The village board voted 5β1 in favor of removing the ban.<ref>{{cite news |author = NRA-ILA |title = Village of Morton Grove to Repeal Gun Ban |url = http://www.nraila.org/News/Read/NewsReleases.aspx?ID=11317 |work = NRA-ILA News |date = July 18, 2008 |access-date = July 19, 2008 |url-status = dead |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20080915230142/http://www.nraila.org/News/Read/NewsReleases.aspx?ID=11317 |archive-date = September 15, 2008 }}</ref>
