==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) of Minden has a total area of 4.3 sqmi, of which 4.3 sqmi is land and 0.04 sqmi (0.5%) is water. The Carson Valley and Minden are considered one of the top gliding spots in the world. Flights of over 1600 km have been made on sailplanes from this location. Its location, east of the Sierra Nevada range, favors lee wave formation. East of the Pine Nuts mountains is the Nevada desert, one of the best thermal generators in the world. U.S. Highway 395 runs through Minden. It is also the terminus of State Route 88, which becomes California State Route 88 on the west side of the state line. ===Climate=== Minden has a cool semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk) with huge diurnal temperature variations during all seasons. Summers are hot to very hot during the day, with 68.5 afternoons topping 90 F and 5.7 afternoons getting over 100 F; however, mornings even in summer are very cool to cold and between June and August. On average, 1.2 mornings will fall under freezing. Rainfall is very rare during the summer as the monsoon practically never reaches this far north: in July more than four years in ten record no measurable precipitation and only one in twenty expects 1 in. Winter afternoons are cool and frequently sunny, but mornings are freezing to frigid. Temperatures of 0 F or below can be expected on two mornings each winter, although all but 4.7 afternoons each year can be expected to top freezing, whilst during the three winter months 45.9 afternoons will typically top 50 F. The hottest temperature on record is 109 F on July 6, 2007 and the coldest is , which occurred on January 21, 1916, January 26, 1949 and February 7, 1989. The coldest afternoon was on January 9, 1937 when the temperature did not top 4 F and the hottest minimum 67 F on August 28 and 29, 1906, June 25, 1927 and August 20, 1931. The majority of precipitation occurs from winter Pacific storm systems, although the Sierra Nevada rain shadow limits the precipitation they produce in Nevada. The wettest “rain year” has been from July 1937 to June 1938 with 17.18 in and the driest from July 1959 to June 1960 with 3.31 in. The wettest day on record has been December 30, 2002 with 3.90 in. With at least 7.90 in, January 1909 was the wettest single month on record. Winter afternoons are warm enough in Minden that most precipitation occurs as rain, although the mean snowfall is 21.8 in. The cold, wet month of January 1916, however, saw as much as 52.0 in of snow and the season from July 1908 to June 1909, 70 in; however, no measurable snow fell between July 1962 and June 1963. <div style="width: 75%;"> {{Weather box |location = Minden, Nevada, 1991–2020 normals, extremes 1906–present |single line = Yes |Jan record high F = 72 |Feb record high F = 77 |Mar record high F = 84 |Apr record high F = 90 |May record high F = 98 |Jun record high F = 105 |Jul record high F = 109 |Aug record high F = 105 |Sep record high F = 102 |Oct record high F = 94 |Nov record high F = 84 |Dec record high F = 73 |Jan avg record high F = 63.3 |Feb avg record high F = 67.5 |Mar avg record high F = 75.2 |Apr avg record high F = 81.8 |May avg record high F = 89.3 |Jun avg record high F = 96.8 |Jul avg record high F = 101.3 |Aug avg record high F = 100.0 |Sep avg record high F = 96.0 |Oct avg record high F = 87.7 |Nov avg record high F = 74.5 |Dec avg record high F = 64.6 |year avg record high F = 102.2 |Jan high F = 46.6 |Feb high F = 51.4 |Mar high F = 58.2 |Apr high F = 63.8 |May high F = 72.6 |Jun high F = 82.6 |Jul high F = 91.2 |Aug high F = 90.3 |Sep high F = 83.4 |Oct high F = 71.2 |Nov high F = 56.8 |Dec high F = 45.8 |year high F = |Jan mean F = 32.8 |Feb mean F = 36.7 |Mar mean F = 42.5 |Apr mean F = 47.1 |May mean F = 55.2 |Jun mean F = 63.1 |Jul mean F = 70.1 |Aug mean F = 68.5 |Sep mean F = 61.8 |Oct mean F = 51.1 |Nov mean F = 39.8 |Dec mean F = 32.2 |year mean F = |Jan low F = 19.0 |Feb low F = 22.1 |Mar low F = 26.8 |Apr low F = 30.4 |May low F = 37.7 |Jun low F = 43.7 |Jul low F = 49.0 |Aug low F = 46.6 |Sep low F = 40.2 |Oct low F = 30.9 |Nov low F = 22.8 |Dec low F = 18.7 |year low F = |Jan avg record low F = 3.0 |Feb avg record low F = 7.7 |Mar avg record low F = 13.6 |Apr avg record low F = 18.5 |May avg record low F = 26.6 |Jun avg record low F = 32.0 |Jul avg record low F = 40.7 |Aug avg record low F = 37.9 |Sep avg record low F = 30.4 |Oct avg record low F = 18.7 |Nov avg record low F = 8.5 |Dec avg record low F = 2.2 |year avg record low F = -3.1 |Jan record low F = -24 |Feb record low F = -24 |Mar record low F = -9 |Apr record low F = 9 |May record low F = 16 |Jun record low F = 22 |Jul record low F = 29 |Aug record low F = 28 |Sep record low F = 20 |Oct record low F = 3 |Nov record low F = -12 |Dec record low F = -22 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 1.70 |Feb precipitation inch = 1.30 |Mar precipitation inch = 1.25 |Apr precipitation inch = 0.49 |May precipitation inch = 0.61 |Jun precipitation inch = 0.33 |Jul precipitation inch = 0.25 |Aug precipitation inch = 0.26 |Sep precipitation inch = 0.21 |Oct precipitation inch = 0.61 |Nov precipitation inch = 0.79 |Dec precipitation inch = 1.54 |year precipitation inch = |Jan snow inch = 5.6 |Feb snow inch = 4.1 |Mar snow inch = 3.4 |Apr snow inch = 1.5 |May snow inch = 0.1 |Jun snow inch = 0.1 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.0 |Oct snow inch = 0.2 |Nov snow inch = 1.6 |Dec snow inch = 5.2 |year snow inch = |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 6.4 |Feb precipitation days = 6.0 |Mar precipitation days = 4.5 |Apr precipitation days = 3.5 |May precipitation days = 3.3 |Jun precipitation days = 1.8 |Jul precipitation days = 1.8 |Aug precipitation days = 1.9 |Sep precipitation days = 1.7 |Oct precipitation days = 2.5 |Nov precipitation days = 4.1 |Dec precipitation days = 5.5 |year precipitation days = 43.0 |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 2.8 |Feb snow days = 1.9 |Mar snow days = 1.6 |Apr snow days = 0.8 |May snow days = 0.2 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.0 |Oct snow days = 0.1 |Nov snow days = 0.9 |Dec snow days = 2.6 |source= NOAA |source 2 = National Weather Service }} </div>
