==Education== Following his return to Montana in 1922, Mansfield worked as a "mucker" and shoveled ore and other waste in the [[copper mine]]s of [[Butte, Montana|Butte]] for eight years.<ref name=congress /> Having never attended high school, he gained admission to [[Montana Tech of the University of Montana|Montana School of Mines]] (MSM) in Butte by taking their entrance examinations. He attended MSM from 1927 to 1928, studying to become a mining engineer.<ref name=tribune /> In 1928, Mansfield met Maureen Hayes, a local schoolteacher who would become his wife. In 1933, he earned both his [[high school equivalency degree|high school equivalency]] and his [[Bachelor of Arts]] degree.<ref name=mansfieldfdn/> He continued with graduate studies at UM, while also working part-time in the [[Registrar (education)#Registrar's office|registrar's office]]<ref name=charting /> and teaching two courses as a [[graduate assistant]].<ref name=mansfieldfdn/> He earned a Master of Arts degree from UM in 1934 with a thesis titled "American Diplomatic Relations with Korea, 1866β1910." After completing his graduate studies, Mansfield accepted a position as administrator and professor at UM, teaching courses in Latin American and Far Eastern History,<ref name=UM-Library-Bio>{{cite web|accessdate=February 22, 2025 |url=https://www.umt.edu/library/about/history/default.php |title=Mike Mansfield: Montana Statesman |work=History of the Mansfield Library |publisher=Mansfield Library, University of Montana}}</ref> and occasionally lecturing on Greek and Roman history.<ref name=tribune /> Additionally, he studied towards a [[PhD]] at the [[University of California, Los Angeles]] (UCLA) from 1936 to 1937.<ref name=congress/> Though he left UM in 1942 to enter politics, he remained a [[Academic tenure|tenured]] Professor of History at the University of Montana until his death.<ref name=MansfieldCenter/>
