As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=January 31, 2008|title=U.S. Census website}}</ref> of 2000, there were 15,633 people, 5,734 households, and 4,432 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|1732.5|PD/sqmi|/km2}}. There were 5,879 housing units at an average density of {{convert|651.5|/sqmi|/km2}}. The racial makeup of the town was 95.42% White, 0.69% African American, 0.05% Native American, 2.90% Asian, 0.06% [[Pacific Islander]], 0.26% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.

There were 5,734 households, out of which 37.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.09.{{Citation needed|date=December 2021}}

In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.0 males.{{Citation needed|date=December 2021}}
