[[African Americans|African-American]] author [[Richard Wright (author)|Richard Wright]], who criticized the proposal, said that "Latin Africa" correlated with "Catholic Africa" and would create an unnecessary religious division against the [[English-speaking world|English-speaking]] "[[Protestantism|Protestant]] Africa".<ref>R.
