=== American era === After the [[Mexican–American War]] ended in 1848, the area of [[Alta California]] was ceded to the United States pursuant to the [[Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo]]. The treaty provided that Mexican land grants be honored and [[Rancho San Joaquin]], which included north Laguna Beach, was [[Land patent|granted]] to [[Sepúlveda family of California|José Antonio Andres Sepúlveda]] prior to the war.
