The [[Seattle Mariners]] selected Griffey with the [[List of first overall Major League Baseball draft picks|first overall selection]] of the [[1987 Major League Baseball draft]], held on June 2, 1987. In 1988, Griffey joined the [[San Bernardino Spirit]] of the [[Class A-Advanced|High-A]] [[California League]].
