===Starting out as a musician=== Mayall was sent to Korea as part of his [[Conscription in the United Kingdom#After 1945|national service]],<ref name="LarkinBlues">{{cite book |title=[[Encyclopedia of Popular Music|The Guinness Who's Who of Blues]] |date=1995 |publisher=[[Guinness Publishing]] |isbn=0-85112-673-1 |editor=[[Colin Larkin]] |edition=Second |page=256/7}}</ref> and during a period of leave bought his first electric guitar in Japan. Back in England, he enrolled at [[Manchester Metropolitan University|Manchester College of Art]] and started playing with a semi-professional band, the Powerhouse Four.<ref name="LarkinBlues" /> After graduation, he obtained a job as an art designer, but continued to play with local musicians. In 1963, he opted for a full-time musical career and moved to London.<ref name="LarkinBlues" /> His previous craft would be put to good use in the designing of covers for many of his coming albums.<ref name="LarkinBlues" />
